| I bought this bag full-price, thinking that it would be functional, attractive, and make a statement for the environment. I never use it. It's too heavy; with my laptop, my shoulder hurts after 10 minutes. It's bulky. And I was never able to charge the photovoltaic cells properly. The backpack might have been easier to carry, but again, probably not for a long time, i.e. to travel. I only take this bag when I have the car to transport it... Counterproductive. ... more |

The Voltaic Messenger™ features 3 rugged solar panels that turn it into a mobile power generator designed to charge: cell phones, PDAs, digital cameras, GPSs, & MP3 players. The solar panels are waterproof, scratch-resistant and efficient, supplying up to 4 watts of power to an internal battery pack - translating into quick charge times for electronics. The rigid panels are positioned on the bag to articulate to the wearer's movement. Voltaic extensively tested and chose these panels because they will withstand the rigors of everyday use (vs. fragile, flexible panels found in other solar bags).
Unlike cheap competitors, all Voltaic solar packs include a solar-powered Li Ion battery pack to store surplus energy, providing a constant charge for electronics - even when the sun goes down (similar technology to solar house systems). The battery's voltage converter (5, 6, 7.2 volts) allows you to charge from a wall socket or car & also has a handy LED torch that you can filp on for emergency lighting.
About Recycled PET
Recycled PET is a durable, eco-friendly fabric made from post consumer recycled plastic bottles & containers. Using recycled PET is smart - it cuts down on waste & minimizes damage to the environment by conserving oil, energy & non-renewable resources. In the U.S. alone over 45 billion plastic containers end up in landfills in 2006. Choosing products made from recycled PET promotes a more sustainable path for plastic. Thanks for doing your part.
