Design & Functionality
The Laptop Lunch Bento Box was modeled after the traditional bento box, a container used in Japanese culture to pack single-portion takeout meals. Updating this classic design, the Laptop Lunch Bento Box integrates a large snap-shut tray, five colorful, modular containers and stainless steel utensils. All the pieces fit together like a puzzle, making it easy to identify a missing item from the set. The five food containers vary in size and two come with lids, enabling parents to pack dry and wet foods securely. The un-lidded containers are designed to accommodate dry foods such as vegetable sticks, crackers, cereal, sliced apple, etc. The lidded containers are perfect for wet foods, such as soups, yogurt, cottage cheese, and dressings. All of the food containers fit into a larger snap-shut tray.

The choice to include only two lids was intentional – surveys indicated that usually one wet food was packed in kid's lunches, and the search for mismatched lids was the number one frustration for parents that packed lunches in reusable containers. The Laptop Lunch Bento Box's unique design alleviates these issues. And from a kid’s perspective, the presentation is exciting. It's more fun to open a bag and see nicely presented food, as opposed to a row of lids.

Also included with the Laptop Lunch Bento Box is a 96-page "User's Guide" featuring information on nutrition, packing a smart lunch, wholesome, quick-meal lunch recipes and tips on reducing waste.

The Laptop Lunch Bento Box is made of high-quality materials and is built to last. Sturdy, rigid containers help protect and keep foods secure during the occasional bumps and bruises on trips to school. Its utensils are made from durable, easy to clean stainless steel. Pair with a non-toxic, reusable ice pack to keep your lunch cold.

Materials
Dishwasher safe food containers are made using plastics (polypropylene and polyethylene) that are FDA-approved for food use, and will not leach harmful chemicals into food. No binding agents, plasticizers, or other materials suspected to contain carcinogens or endocrine disrupters are used to make the Laptop Lunch Bento Box.

Sustainability
  • Fact: According to the New York State Department of Conservation, parents who pack a child's lunch in disposable bags or containers generate 45 to 90 pounds of garbage every year. That equates to 18,760 pounds of lunch waste for just one average-size elementary school.

  • Fact: "Lunchtime trash is second only to office paper as the leading source of school waste..."(Green Teacher Magazine, Fall '04)
One of the main design objectives for the Laptop Lunch Bento Box was to provide parents with a sustainable alternative to the wasteful, single-use containers so prevalent in today's school lunches. Home made lunches are not only more nutritious than prepackaged lunches, but they tend to cost less as well. It has been estimated that a person taking a disposable lunch to school will spend an average of $4.02 per day or $723.60 per school year. A person who packs a waste-free lunch will spend about $2.65 a day or $477.00 per school year. That equates into about $250 in savings per person/year.

  • The Laptop Bento Box will pay for itself in as little as 25 uses.

I really like the idea of this lunch box. I have found a way to include an ice pack to keep the food cool. My daughter likes it but she says it is very messy. I think this is due to the fact that there is only one larger section with a lid. I do wish there was a way to send a whole piece of fruit within the larger outer carrier. I would buy this again but I have a different bag that I send when I need to include larger or items that do not fit in the bento stlye containers.

    by Serena A - 10/2009

AWFUL product in terms of design. I really don't understand where all the rave reviews are coming from. I just received 2 of these lunch boxes in the mail after seeing them advertised in a parenting magazine. I liked the idea of a compact, environmentally friendly lunch box. But when I opened it, I was dismayed to see that: 1. All of the containers don't have lids!! I then reviewed their website and saw in the FAQ that their "research" showed that most parents only pack 1 wet item for their child at lunch. Not me. I usually pack 2-3 wet items. Not having enough lids on all the containers is not realistic. 2. The box takes a bit of practice to open. 3. The containers that DO have lids are hard to open. 4. Realized it would have been nice to have a built in handle. I called the company and they are going to give me a full refund......however, they are trying to say that I am responsible for paying shipping costs to send it back, because "the company doesn't want to lose money." Umm....yeah...but what about the unsatisfied customer? Should *I* be the one to lose money because their product didn't meet my expectations?? I think not.

I wanted to like this, but it is way too small for me. I have to pack food for 10 hours or more and this was not even big enough for breakfast and lunch. Not for adults who work 8 or more hours a day. I never put food in it, but I washed it. I will be giving this to my Goddaughter for her birthday so it will not go to waste.

    by Amy K - 10/2009

Got these for my two boys for their school lunches. They love them and are proud to show them off to their friends. Little bento boxes inside are the perfect size for all the necessary elements of lunch! Easy to clean; saves us from using plastic baggies, etc.

    by Stacy G - 10/2009

Over the last five years, I have bought six of these laptop lunchboxes (boxes only, not the insulated bag or water bottle) for myself and my four children. This current box was a replacement for one that I bought five years ago. The other two that I bought at that same time, show no signs or wear. Clearly, I am a big fan. They are durable, easy to wash, and provide enough space for a well-rounded meal with or without the compartment inserts. In my dreams, this lunch box would not be made out of plastic. That is the only downside that I see. I feel a little gnaw of guilt about that. Also, the silverware isn't durable at all, and the handles on most of ours have broken. However, the boxes do fit small regular utensils so it has never been a issue.

Our family has purchased three Bento Boxes from Reusablebags.com. The first, which was purchased over a year ago, has been used Monday through Friday, week in and week out, and still looks brand new. We purchased the other two to encourage our kids to eat healthy food for lunch at school. They love filling the compartments with fruits and veggies. Everyone who eats away from home should have a Bento Box.

    We love this lunchbox!

    by Laura M - 09/2009

We love this lunchbox! The only thing is it is a bit thin. My son eats lunch really late, and there is no room for an ice pack on top to keep his fruit cold. His bananas and strawberries get slimy if I cut them up, so I just leave them whole. Not good for liquidy items like pudding or jello as they will run everywhere. But I am very happy with this purchase!

    by Christine B - 08/2009

We have used the laptop lunchboxes for 3 years (going into our fourth) for both kids. They love them and we find new ways to configure them each year as our needs change. My youngest eats from it all day (two snacks and lunch). Both get compliments from their friends as well as the lunch monitors about how healthy and fun their food looks. It has given me the ability to send things I couldn't in a conventional lunchbox and they love the variety. I have more than 2 so we can still function of one gets left at school, but they've been great!

Disappointed with this lunchbox. I guess I'm not crazy about the design and colors, otherwise I would be more motivated to keep trying it out. I also neglected to buy the carrier for it because I didn't want to spend more money; it should have built in handles.

    by Daniella D - 05/2009

I got the Laptop Lunches - Bento Boxes for my 2 daughters to take lunch to school. They love them. The colors are great and they love that they are environmentally friendly. The laptop case that came with them is perfect for swinging over a shoulder. I personally have to get used to washing them out every time we reuse them (which is daily) instead of just dumping out the baggies out of the regular lunch boxes. But I know it is best for the environement and we all feel good about that.

    by Suzanne S - 02/2009

I don't gush about things, but I have to admit that I'm at least moderately gushy about the Laptop Lunch. It's just the thing for packing my husband's lunch for work. It's designed to be kid-sized, but it's perfect for a 200 lb., moderately actuive guy. The multiple containers make it easy to pack a nice variety of fruits and vegetables, so his lunch diet is generally better than what it would be if he bought his lunch. My only real squawk is that only one of the containers aside from the dip container has a lid, so it's a little bit limiting if I want to pack two things that are juicy or liquid-y. Pack the wrong thing without a lid and it will drip -- it would be nice if one of the small containers had a lid, as well. The colors are not exactly dignified, but it's made for kids, after all, and it can be fun to coordinate food colors with contrasting containers, if I'm in the mood for it. The containers are sturdy, and bless 'em, they're dishwasher- and microwave-proof. You do have to be careful to press down the lid on the closeable container, but it's not a big deal as long as you don't try to overfill it. I personally found the accompanying booklet to be very bologna-and-cheese, rather than inspiring, but once again, it's designed for kids; I can figure out my own menus just fine anyway.

    We love the laptop lunch!

    by Vanessa B - 02/2009

We love the laptop lunch! It has totally transformed lunch around here. I bought 1 each for my 2 boys. Lunch is fun to pack and the compartments inspire more variety. The boys are so excited to see what is in their box every day. A suprising plus is that the box keeps everything so organized and attractive that my boys actually (voluntarily) come home and finish off what they didn't eat at school for a snack. Lastly, it is so nice not to use all those ziplocs. (It fits perfectly inside the lunchboxes I already had).

I’m back to order another Laptop Lunchbox (LL), bu

    by Christine B - 01/2009

I’m back to order another Laptop Lunchbox (LL), but thought I’d write a review first. I LOVE this lunch box! I bought my first one back in 2007, when my daughter started daycare. I had to provide my now three-and-a-half-year old daughter with two snacks plus lunch each day, and I had absolutely no problem packing it all in the LL. On days when I was the last parent to arrive & put her lunch in the fridge, it was a piece of cake – it easily fit on top of the teachers’ 12-pack box of soda; no more fighting to cram a soft-sided lunch bag into too little space. EVERYONE – teachers, other parents and kids – commented positively on the lunch box, as well as the food inside it (and I’m not one of those wildly creative Bento-making moms, either!). She did have a little trouble opening it by herself in the beginning, but she's a pro with it these days. If you are considering purchasing the LL, you should be aware that only two of the containers come with lids: one of the large (one cup capacity) ones and the dip container (1 oz) . Since so many of the previous commenters have complained about this, I thought I’d share my very simple, inexpensive solution: I ordered several small containers (the Extra-tight Food Container R 4P; $1.25 for four) from Ichiban Kan (www.ichibankan.com). These containers fit perfectly into the small containers’ slots, and although they don’t hold quite as much as the LL’s open top cups will, they are perfect for a kid-size (or diet-size) portion of pudding or yogurt or other goopy food. Additionally, I sometimes use one of my square silicone muffin cups inside the large container to keep moist foods away from the dry ones (for example, crackers separate from cheese cubes or cucumber slices). Another complaint I’ve read in the reviews is that the boxes have a tendency to pop open. That *can* be a problem if the LL is transported in a backpack or tote bag – if something presses against the latch hard enough, it *will* open. Again, I came up with something that works for us: I wrapped a piece of wide black elastic around the box to fit (side to side), then lapped the ends about an inch and sewed them together securely. (Actually, I stole the idea from another Bento container I bought which came with its own elastic strap.) It slips on and off easily enough for my daughter to manage by herself. I do have to second Alissa’s previous comment about the book that comes with each LL – it would be nice if RB was able to sell one without it. I will probably donate the extra books to my daughter’s preschool or daycare, or the local public library, though, because they are really informative and have plenty of suggestions on what to pack for lunch.
