Design and Functionality
The Laptop Lunch Kit was modeled after the traditional bento box, a container used in Japanese culture to pack single-portion takeout meals. Updating this classic design, the Laptop Lunch Kit integrates a large snap-shut tray, five colorful, modular containers, a reusable sport bottle and stainless steel utensils into a zippered carrying case. All the pieces fit together like a puzzle, making it easy to identify a missing item from the set. The five food containers vary in size and two come with lids, enabling parents to pack dry and wet foods securely. The un-lidded containers are designed to accommodate dry foods such as vegetable sticks, crackers, cereal, sliced apple, etc. The lidded containers are perfect for wet foods, such as soups, yogurt, cottage cheese, and dressings. All of the food containers fit into a larger snap-shut tray, which slides into a custom designed, thermal carrying case.

The choice to include only two lids was intentional – surveys indicated that usually one wet food was packed in kid's lunches, and the search for mismatched lids was the number one frustration for parents that packed lunches in reusable containers. The Laptop Lunch Kit's unique design alleviates these issues. And from a kid's perspective, the presentation is exciting. It’s more fun to open a bag and see nicely presented food, as opposed to a row of lids.

The insulated zippered carrying case features an interior mesh pocket for placing a non-toxic, reusable ice pack, keeping temperature sensitive foods cool and protected from the heat. It also helps protect foods from the possibility of developing harmful bacteria, especially during those hours between leaving the house and lunchtime. And the stainless steel fork and spoon are safer to use than disposable utensils and are easy to handle and clean. The case also has an outer envelope pocket that zips shut – great for packing a cloth napkin. Designed to fit on an airplane tray, the thermal carrying case has a durable shoulder strap and is very useful for meals while traveling. The case sports a stylish nametag for parents to label their child's kit.

Also included with the Laptop Lunch Kit is a 96-page "User's Guide" featuring information on nutrition, packing a smart lunch, wholesome, quick-meal lunch recipes and tips on reducing waste.

Sustainability
  • Fact: According to the New York State Department of Conservation, parents who pack a child's lunch in disposable bags or containers generate 45 to 90 pounds of garbage every year. That equates to 18,760 pounds of lunch waste for just one average-size elementary school.

  • Fact: "Lunchtime trash is second only to office paper as the leading source of school waste..."(Green Teacher Magazine, Fall ’04)

One of the main design objectives for the Laptop Lunch Kit was to provide parents with a sustainable alternative to the wasteful, single-use containers so prevalent in today's school lunches<. Home made lunches are not only more nutritious than prepackaged lunches, but they tend to cost less as well. It has been estimated that a person taking a disposable lunch to school will spend an average of $4.02 per day or $723.60 per school year. A person who packs a waste-free lunch will spend about $2.65 a day or $477.00 per school year. That equates into about $250 in savings per person/year.

  • The Laptop Lunch Kit will pay for itself in as little as 25 uses.

  • Materials
Dishwasher safe food containers are made using plastics (polypropylene and polyethylene) that are FDA-approved for food use, and will not leach harmful chemicals into food. No binding agents, plasticizers, or other materials suspected to contain carcinogens or endocrine disrupters are used to make the Laptop Lunch Kit. The Laptop Lunch Kit is made of high-quality materials and is built to last. Sturdy, rigid containers help prevent "squishing," keeping foods secure during the occasional bumps and bruises on trips to school. Its utensils are made from durable, easy to clean stainless steel. The thermal carrying case has a durable nylon shoulder strap with large, easy to grab zippers.

    About Laptop Lunches
The Laptop Lunch Kit was developed by two mothers (Tammy Pelstring and Amy Hemmert) with a mission of helping families improve lunchtime nutrition and reduce waste. And since they believe that healthy kids come from healthy communities, they donate a portion of profits to schools and environmental organizations.

    Care Instructions
    Top-rack dishwasher safe.

    Country of Origin
The Laptop Lunches bento box is Made in the USA at a California manufacturing site that adheres to strict health, safety and environmental standards. This was a conscious decision by the product's developers, who wanted to ensure that the food containers were made safely and to the highest standards possible.

My son, now 8, has been using this for 2 years

    by Brenda C - 08/2009

My son, now 8, has been using this for 2 years. Like many others, I wish that there were lids for the 2 smaller containers. I have no problem fitting a sandwich in the large open container. I've even made tortilla sandwiches and with cutting them into pie shapes, they still fit. I use cloth napkins as well and they fit nicely in the zipper pocket. My son uses the utensils regularly...no breaks in 2 yrs. Perhaps they need to be hand washed (that's what we do...I hand wash the entire kit.) The water bottle does leak...my biggest pet peeve about the kit. I really would have thought that they would have fixed this by now as well as add some more lids. All and all, it's still a good buy. Please please, ADD LIDS and a better water bottle cap!

My son enjoys using his laptop lunch bag and I'm generally pleased with it. I didn't give it 5 stars for the following reasons. I wish there was an option of having lids for all the containers, not just one. The water bottle tended to leak fairly often and it cracked three times. After the third bottle, I stopped replacing it. But I do like the separate/different size containers. He tends to have a small appetite and the size of the lunch kit works for him.

    Need More Lids

    by Haley M - 02/2010

My son's school has a no waste lunch day once a week but I am trying to make it waste free everyday. My son is in 3rd grade and thought the Laptop lunch is pretty cool. The fact that he likes it and takes it to school is a big plus but the one negative is that I feel it should provide more than one lid. I find that I have to use plastic wrap over some of the containers so the food does leak out or make a mess which defeats the whole purpose of a waste free lunch. For example, I packed loose cereal that my son likes to have for lunch some days. After opening up the lunch box the crumbs from the cereal had leaked out all over the inside of the lunchbox. We are using it but it is somewhat limited especially if you want to pack something that does have a container like a small yogurt. It will not fit inside the lunchbox.

    Love these lunchboxes!

I bought two Bento Boxes with case, one for my five year old son and one for my eight year old son. They both love them, and their teachers have had very positive comments as well. The water bottle that fits into the case has eliminated them taking juice boxes, and they are now taking water!

First, I actually love the bento box and so does my son! He thinks it great to carry a "laptop" style bag, just like Mommy & Daddy. He's very particular, but just loves his special bag. The box is great: it reduces waste, keeps items cool, easy to use & looks cool! The only negative is that it could be bigger. For now it's perfect, but I don't know how long we can use it.

We have had our laptop lunches for three years now

    by Barbara J - 09/2009

We have had our laptop lunches for three years now and LOVE them. My children are 8 and 9 and are big eaters. It is amazing how much food I can pack in their laptops. To fit a whole extra large sandwich in, I just remove the two large containers and it fits well. I did ditch the water bottle the first year and bought kleen kanteen sm. (12 oz.) stainless water bottles and they fit pretty well. The untensils broke early on also and I bought some small metal ones from goodwill. The kids love the smallest container for veggie dips, carmel, salt or other condiments. I wish there was one more lid, but if I have something a little juicy (pineapple, salsa etc) I wrap one container with foil and it works pretty well. Three years later it still looks brand new.

I love this bento box with case and so does my 8th

    by Nancy M - 09/2009

I love this bento box with case and so does my 8th grader, who is not easy to please. I love the containers to give him several choices and keep them separate. Even the containers without lids keep food contained because the big container (that the little ones fit inside) closes tightly and keeps everyting neat and in its place. My son likes it because it all fits together well (like a puzzle) and it looks cool. He also like the slim profile of the case. This is a great product that I reccomend 100%. My daughter has a beautiful lunch box made by Built that I am going to order the bento box to go inside. Thanks Reusablebags.com for making this product available.

I love laptop lunches Bento Box

    by Kimberly R - 09/2009

I love laptop lunches Bento Box. The case is a nice upgrade from last year. Silverware still leaves something to be desired. The first spoon fell apart the second week. Most of the silverware from last years' set has fallen apart... need a redesign! The case and water bottle make a nice set. The water bottle is a bit tough to clean, because it's so narrow. I like that they're BPA free. Another accessory I would like to see is a hot/cold ice/ heat pack. In summary, I use these every day. Love them (except the silverware)

I bought a Laptop Lunch System for my son 2 years

    by Mary H - 08/2009

I bought a Laptop Lunch System for my son 2 years ago when he entered kindergarten, and we've been very happy with it, for the most part. I liked that the company was making the product in the USA and I found their customer service to be very friendly & helpful. My complaints are mostly the same as the other reviewers: the bottle, although it's a nice size and shape, doesn't hold up to extended use, the inner compartments need lids (both lidded compartments in our set never closed properly after their first dishwashing) and the utensils don't quite fit into their slots. Judging by the reviews here, it doesn't sound as though these problems have been addressed since we bought our system. On the upside, I found that the bento box worked well with dry and semi-moist foods even without inner lids, and my son liked having a variety of foods presented attractively in smallish quantities (he's a light & picky eater.) Even with the small container size, I often ended up packing far more than he could finish, and I've been satisfied with the portion sizes when I've used the system myself. YMMV. I'd also like to note that the insulated lunchbox is really well-made. Ours has held up quite well, even after taking an awful beating and getting far more use than the bento containers. It's gone through the wash at least a dozen times, and still no tears or rips. Overall I feel it was worth the rather steep price, but I'd feel better recommending the product if the company switched over to a better drink bottle & added some more lidded containers.

    Love the Laptop lunch box/bag!

    by Tamara H - 05/2009

Love the Laptop lunch box/bag! I've found that the portions are right--the box is motivating for my daughter and it keeps me pretty well trained so that I don't have lunch stuff all over the kitchen at the end of the week (I wash every night--actually, my daughter loves to help!). I'd get two if I could!!

    by Tabitha S - 04/2009

My 6 and a half year old first grader absolutely loves his laptop lunch kit! No more baggies! At first I wasn't sure about all of the containers not having lids, but we haven't had a mess yet, it really is such a great kit. It washes up so nice and it even makes packing his lunch a breeze. I've even noticed that he comes home with less left over. I would recommend the laptop lunch kit to any parent who gives their kids a home lunch. Oh! and the book that comes with it is packed with really great tips on giving our kids healthier lunch choices!

    by Wendy M - 01/2009

I agree with the other posters who love their Laptop Lunch kits. All the things they say are true - they are a great way to create healthy lunches for kids, the food stays put, and I have stopped using plastic bags in my daughter's lunch completely. Plus, my daughter loves her pink lunchbox. The reason I am writing, though, is to say that initially, I didn't want to spend the money on the laptop lunch system. It seemed so expensive. Well, we have had the Laptop lunch set for almost TWO YEARS and it shows no signs of wearing out. I occasionally give the outside nylon zipper sleeve a deep cleaning with soap and water, and it is as good as new. The inner lining has never ripped or torn. The plastic bento box pieces are as good as when we bought the system, and the water bottle is still working. If you use juice in the bottle over time, you have to give the lid a soak in bleach or vinegar once in a while. I fully expect that this system will be around for at least another year, if not more. It was well worth the investment!
