Ireland's PlasTax, designed to rein in their rampant consumption of 1.2 billion plastic shopping bags per year, resulted in a 90% drop in consumption and approximately 1 billion fewer bags consumed annually.

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg has called for a 6-cent fee on every plastic bag consumed at checkout. If the proposal passes, New York City will follow the lead of Ireland and other countries to become the first major city in the U.S. to enact a bag tax.
