Waking People Up...

For the last four years, we've been fighting hard to spread the word on the massive over-consumption of plastic shopping bags. Is the plastic bag the worst thing adversely affecting our environment? Probably not. However it is very important because of its ubiquitous nature. Nearly all of us use them - all the time. Pervasive & out of control, it's a powerful symbol of consumerism gone wild.

We hope to make the act of mindlessly consuming plastic bags uncool - by raising awareness & keeping you informed. The newsletter features top picks from our Newsroom, giving you the inside track on plastic bag news, trends & ideas worldwide. You'll find a range of interesting stories, from environmental impacts to industry & retailer plans. As editors, we comb through hundreds of articles weekly & select only the best to share.

Help support the movement - forward the newsletter on! Expect a new one every few weeks. Each issue represents a sampling of articles so visit our Newsroom for more. As the newsletter evolves, we’d love to hear from you. Please contact us with feedback or articles to consider.

"Plastic waste is the most visible and a major concern because it has environmental implications and there is need for us to manage the problem," he said.

BBC News, 11.10.06

Zanzibar's ban on the import and production of plastic bags has come into effect. But the BBC's Ally Saleh in Zanzibar says many people are sceptical about whether the ban will be enforced.
